Julie Macfarlane has a special interest in Orthodontics. She gained her Diploma in General Dental Practice (UK) in 1993 by examination through the Royal College of Surgeons (England) along with her Extended Certificate in Orthodontics from Manchester Dental School the same year. Julie has gone on to attain a Post Graduate Certificate of Health Education in 2010 from the University of Central Lancashire.
Immediately after qualification, Julie completed Hospital posts in Oral Surgery and Orthodontics leading to a part time Clinical Assistant post in Orthodontics in a General Hospital for over 6 years. She opened her own practice in 1991, continuing her Professional Development by completing hands-on courses in Advanced Restorative Treatment and developing her interest in Health Education.
In 2003, Julie was appointed on to the Fitness to Practice Panel at the General Dental Council, becoming a chairman in 2005 until the completion of her tenure in 2014. She has worked as an External Professional Assessor for the NHS Parliamentary Ombudsman for Patient Complaints Resolution and is currently the Associate Dean for Conduct and Performance at Health Education North West.
Julie is a member of the British Dental Association (BDA), the Faculty of General Practitioners (FGDP), the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) and the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM). She has been an active member of the Local Dental Committee since 1991 working as Treasurer and then Secretary since 2000.
She has served as an External Professional Assessor for the NHS Parliamentary ombudsman for patient’s complaints resolution and worked as the Associate Dean for conduct and performance at Health Education England, in the North west, for 10 years until retiring in 2020.
Fiona Sutcliffe has been practising cosmetic and restorative dentistry for over 24 years. Fiona qualified as a dentist from Leeds University in 1991 with a distinction in Oral Surgery and has since completed several postgraduate courses in Advanced Restorative Dentistry to develop her expertise in Cosmetic Dentistry. She joined the Whalley practice in 1997 taking the opportunity to expand the NHS services then available into the exciting, fast growing, specialist service. Fiona became a partner in 2003. She is an Associate member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentists.

Matthew studied dentistry at the University of Leeds qualifying in 2000 (BChD). Following his vocational training year, Matthew spent 3 years working as a senior house officer in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at York District Hospital. It was during this time that Matthew sat and passed the postgraduate examinations to attain Membership in the Faculty of Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MFDS RCS).
Matthew has also been a tutor in oral surgery at Leeds and Manchester Universities for over 6 years.
For over 17 years, Matthew has been involved in the placement and restoration of dental implants. Matthew successfully obtained the Diploma in Implant Dentistry awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (DipImpDent RCS). This qualification is widely considered the gold standard in dental implant training in the UK. He is experienced in simple/complex implant placements, immediate placements/loading, guided bone regeneration techniques, block bone grafting, open/closed sinus grafting, soft tissue surgery and is skilled in both the surgical and restorative aspects of dental implantology
Matthew embraces lifelong learning and evidence-based dentistry. To this end, Matthew is an active member of the Association of Dental Implantology and the International Team of Implantogists (ITI). In addition, Matthew travels to the University of Bern, Switzerland, to keep abreast of the most predictable treatments.
A user of Straumann dental implants, Matthew’s work is restoratively driven, often involving the use of Cone Beam CT scans along with guided surgery planning and placement where appropriate.
Matthew attained the Postgraduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation at Newcastle University (PGDip Con Sed). Conscious sedation is an excellent technique used to alleviate dental anxiety and is particularly useful for dental implant and oral surgery procedures.
Matthew accepts referrals from dentists for dental implant procedures and dental treatment under conscious sedation.
Outside of dentistry, Matthew enjoys keeping active notably completing a solo swim of the English Channel for Christie Hospital.
Rebecca qualified from Sheffield University in 2007 and completed the Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties postgraduate diploma. She attained a certificate for Facilitating Learning in Healthcare Practice which enabled her to be an Educational Supervisor to newly qualified Dentists, a role she thoroughly enjoyed over the years. Rebecca worked with Julie in this capacity whilst Julie was an Associate Dean for Health Education England and it is through this contact that she joined the practice as an Associate in 2018. Rebecca is also qualified to provide non-surgical facial aesthetics.

Outside of dentistry, my husband and I enjoy being super busy parents to two wonderful young children who keep us on our toes. In my spare time I play in a netball team which is a huge passion of mine. When time allows I enjoy helping fundraise for my children’s school.”
We employ three dental hygienists – Denise Stott, Cathy Jefferies & Katie Holt who are trained in all aspects of dental care, including scaling and polishing teeth and the use of ‘Airflow’.
I qualified from Liverpool dental university in 2012 with a diploma in dental hygiene and therapy. I enjoy all aspects of my role and I am always keen to enhance my skills, I find periodontal treatment rewarding by working closely with patients to motivate them in the care of their teeth and gums and to help implement a home care regime that helps them improve and maintain their oral health. I was a dental nurse tutor/assessor at training 2000 3 years Outside of dentistry I have a busy life with my husband and our two sons. I enjoy spending time with my family, and friends.
Denise qualified in the Royal Air Force in 1980 at the Institute of Dental Health & Training GDC No. 2028. Her post graduate studies include Local Anaesthetics, Impression taking, temporary replacement fillings and Implant care.
She also has a keen interest in periodontal therapy. In 1998 she was awarded a Certificate in Counselling Skills and a Foundation Diploma in Neuro Linguistic Programming in 2001.
I qualified as a dental hygienist from Guys Hospital London in 1987 and since then have thoroughly enjoyed updating my skills. I still enjoy meeting and motivating patients to achieve the best oral health possible and treating their gum disease and improving their periodontal health.
Outside work I love walking the fells and fields with my hound.
