Julie Macfarlane has a special interest in Orthodontics. She gained her Diploma in General Dental Practice (UK) in 1993 by examination through the Royal College of Surgeons (England) along with her Extended Certificate in Orthodontics from Manchester Dental School the same year. Julie has gone on to attain a Post Graduate Certificate of Health Education in 2010 from the University of Central Lancashire.
Immediately after qualification, Julie completed Hospital posts in Oral Surgery and Orthodontics leading to a part time Clinical Assistant post in Orthodontics in a General Hospital for over 6 years. She opened her own practice in 1991, continuing her Professional Development by completing hands-on courses in Advanced Restorative Treatment and developing her interest in Health Education.
In 2003, Julie was appointed on to the Fitness to Practice Panel at the General Dental Council, becoming a chairman in 2005 until the completion of her tenure in 2014. She has worked as an External Professional Assessor for the NHS Parliamentary Ombudsman for Patient Complaints Resolution and is currently the Associate Dean for Conduct and Performance at Health Education North West.
Julie is a member of the British Dental Association (BDA), the Faculty of General Practitioners (FGDP), the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) and the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM). She has been an active member of the Local Dental Committee since 1991 working as Treasurer and then Secretary since 2000.
Fiona Sutcliffe has been practising cosmetic and restorative dentistry for over 24 years. Fiona qualified as a dentist from Leeds University in 1991 with a distinction in Oral Surgery and has since completed several postgraduate courses in Advanced Restorative Dentistry to develop her expertise in Cosmetic Dentistry. She joined the Whalley practice in 1997 taking the opportunity to expand the NHS services then available into the exciting, fast growing, specialist service. Fiona became a partner in 2003. She is an Associate member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentists.
Matthew studied dentistry at Leeds University and qualified in 2000. Following his vocational training year in Bradford, Matthew spent 2 years working as a senior house officer in oral and maxillofacial surgery at York District Hospital. It was during this time that Matthew sat and passed the postgraduate examinations to attain Membership in the Faculty of Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MFDS RCS).
For the past ten years, Matthew has been involved in the placement and restoration of dental implants. He has developed a wide experience in bone grafting and sinus grafting techniques to enable patients who ordinarily would not be suitable candidates, to be successfully treated. Matthew successfully obtained his Diploma in Implant Dentistry awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2010 (DipImpDent RCS). This qualification is widely considered the gold standard in dental implant training in the UK. Matthew regularly attends courses home and abroad on many aspects of dental implantology.
Matthew has a special interest in oral surgery and has been a tutor in oral surgery at Leeds and Manchester Universities. This has enable Matthew to pass on his knowledge in oral surgery to undergraduate students as well as keep up to date with current techniques.
Outside from dentistry, Matthew enjoys leading an active life with his wife and their two children. In 2009, Matthew successful completed a solo swim across the English Channel in 13 hours and 20 minutes raising over £3000 for Christies Hospital.
We employ two dental hygienists – Carol Henderson & Denise Stott who are trained in all aspects of dental care, including scaling and polishing teeth and the use of ‘Airflow’.
Carol qualified from the University of Manchester Dental School in Dental Hygiene in 1985 GDC No. 3438. She was awarded a Royal Society of Health Diploma in Dental Health Education in 1986.
More recently she has specialised in ‘periodontal health around implants’ and is a member of the British Dental Hygienist Association. In 1998 she was awarded the Diploma in Reflexology.
She was an Oral Health Tutor at Accrington & Rossendale Collage for 3 years.
Denise qualified in the Royal Air Force in 1980 at the Institute of Dental Health & Training GDC No. 2028. Her post graduate studies include Local Anaesthetics, Impression taking, temporary replacement fillings and Implant care.
She also has a keen interest in periodontal therapy. In 1998 she was awarded a Certificate in Counselling Skills and a Foundation Diploma in Neuro Linguistic Programming in 2001.
